Coggeshall Farm Museum in Bristol, RI
Join Coggeshall Farm for their Spring Homeschool Day! Spring has sprung, the farm is busy with baby animals and new growth, and Coggeshall is getting hands-on with learning.
Homeschool Day has a rotating series of programs, workshops, and self-guided activities geared for ages 4+ that bring the historic world to life. Sign up for our Home School eNews list here to be the first to hear about future Home School Days at Coggeshall Farm Museum.
Things to know:
- Coggeshall Farm Museum will be closed to the public on this day except for participating homeschoolers. Your child must be registered for at least one workshop to attend.
- Classes are $10 per homeschooler and admission for accompanying grownups is free.
- Pre-registration is required for all activities listed below.
- These are not drop-in programs and our staff will have a list of registrants for each workshop.
- Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel your workshop tickets. There is a high demand for these workshops and we would like to be able to offer spots to other participants. You can contact us at coggeshalled@osv.org.
- Students’ guardians must stay in close proximity of the program location for the entire duration of the activity for safety reasons.

Woodworking: Happy Hedgehogs | 11:00 am | Ages 4+

Back by Popular Demand! Calling all woodworkers! Our littlest friends will learn all about the woodshop in this accessible, hands-on project. Kids ages four and up are invited into the shop to hear a story, meet the tools, and learn shop safety. Afterwards, children and their guardian will work together to put those new skills to use by hammering, tapping, and banging their way into building a new wooden hedgehog friend to bring home.
A parent or guardian must stay with their child through this program.
Wool Dying | 11:00 am | Ages 7+

Back by Popular Demand! Participants in this workshop will learn all about transforming dirty wool on the sheep into vibrant colorful warn! We will meet the sheep, practice carding and spinning, learn about historic dyes, and then, we will dye our own skein of wool yarn using a modern dye: kool-aid!
Book Binding & Marble Paper | 11:00 am | Ages 9+
During the 1790s, printing was a very important job. Printers in a town like Bristol printed posters, books, and pamphlets. Learn all about how a book is put together before sewing your own using traditional bookbinding methods. We’ll also marble the cover for an artistic finish.
Foraged Foods | 11:00 am | Ages 10+
Coggeshall Farm Museum is home to more food sources then what grows in our Kitchen Garden. Join our educators as they teach you to find and prepare common forgeable plants and ingredients.
Audubon Presents: Owl Prowl | 12:00 pm | All Ages
There’s more animals on this farm then meets the eye! Learn about one of the apex predators living here in our woodlands—the owl—and meet one of the Audubon’s owl ambassadors! Meeting between the morning and afternoon session, this program is perfect for families planning on staying for both, or who are bird enthusiasts! Price is $8 per homeschooler.
Buzzing Bees | 1:00 pm | Ages 4+

What’s all the buzz about bees? Learn about our favorite pollinators in this class designed for our youngest friends. Listen to a story, create your own seed balls, and create a bee hotel!
Johnny Cakes Hearth Cooking | 1:00 pm | Ages 7+
Locals may have heard of one of Rhode Island’s most famous historical snacks—the Johnny Cake! Learn how to make this delicious cornmeal pancake over our historic hearth and try it with molasses or maple syrup!
Ingredients include: cornmeal, salt, butter, molasses, and maple syrup.
Tapestry Weaving | 1:00 pm | Ages 9+
Create your very own work of art! Learn how to use a lap-loom to create a hanging wall piece using traditional weaving techniques.
Woodworking | 1:00 pm | Ages 10+
